Every few years a perfect movie comes along. This has been going on all my life. You have movies that a REALLY GOOD, movies that are ok and movies that suck. My idea of a perfect film is one that is so good that you can’t get it out of your head. You walk out of the theatre feeling like you can take on the world. You go back and see the movie again and again and it never gets old. It so fucking good, that it almost brings you to tears. To name a few, Alien, Aliens, Star Wars 4-6, LOTR, Superman 1 and 2, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Spiderman, The Spy Who Loved Me, Casino Royale, etc. I could go on for days. If I had to list all the other movies I could go on for years. I think as movie goers, and especially geek movie goers, we want the perfect film every time but we don’t get always get it. For instance, what the fuck happened with Superman Returns?!!?!? WHAT THE FUCK!?!? What about all the shitty Alien films…well Alien 3 and 4? 3 wasn’t shitty but it had major issues. Anyways, I think you get my point. As an ex-comic head and geek, I’ve been waiting for the perfect movie for sometime. At least since Iron Man 1. My favorite super hero movie of all time WAS The Incredibles until today at approximately 11:15am. My perfect film of the year and also favorite all time superhero film is now The Avengers.
I made sure to catch up with Captain America, the only film I didn’t see on the big screen, before watching Avengers. I’d say they are all required viewing, even both Hulks, which I love. From the opening scene to the very short end, The Avengers will have you grinning from ear to ear. It is absolutely a beast of a film. It is truly a comic book brought to life and in the literal sense. I smiled and grinned and laughed my ass off. Most of the smiling and grinning kept me from crying like a star struck groupie. It was a whirlwind of ‘OMFG could this get any better?!’.
Every character had ample screen time in both dialogue and special f/x jizzery. Might I add, and I think this is a first, that both ILM and WETA Digital worked on the effects for this one film? Is that nutz? They had to assemble the Avengers team of F/X just for this one film! Imagine that? With a cast so great and characters so deep what could go wrong? Nothing. It was perfect. Robert Downey was at his best as Tony Stark, Chris Hemsworth was Shakespear on roids, Chris Evans fell right back into his role as Captain America perfectly and Mark Ruffalo stole the show for me. Him and his Mr. Hyde were absolutely perfect and he was the best damn Bruce Banner to ever grace the big screen. You can’t go wrong with Scarlet Johansson as Black Widow. She’s hawt as fuck and delivers realistic fighting scenes and a believably badass heroine. Jeremy Renner continues to grow on me as an actor and was excellent as Hawkeye. Even though I had my reservations about Samuel Jackson taking on a role I felt was better suited for Tom Selleck, he’s always great no matter what role you throw at him. Even Tom Hiddleston was a venerable heavy as Loki. Much more so than he was in Thor and I’m grateful that Whedon took these characters to the limits.
This would be much easier to write if only a few of the characters performed well, but they all kicked ass. I’ve tried as hard as I can to find something wrong with this film and I can’t. Just like the years of dreams about Alien, I’m sure I’ll be dreaming about The Avengers for sometime to come. It will have that affect on you. The greatest thing about this film is it’s not campy, not filled with Hollywood fluff and shows once again that Joss Whedon is beast! This movie is the watershed for superhero films. If Hollywood doesn’t wake the fuck up after witnessing this epic film, nothing will change it. It’s comics brought to life! Simple as that.
It’s Friday and the movie is out. Run now…run to the movie theater and watch it. Do not pass Go, do not go clubbing, do not watch tv, do not work late and do not fuck your partner until after you have seen this film! Drop everything you are doing and get to the theater as soon as possible. I will be back to see this film 4 more times. Any comic-head or geek with an ounce of respect for good writing absolutely must see The Avengers. It’s the comic book film we’ve all been waiting for since we were born. It’s the perfect film. It’s the reason why it’s ok to forget about real life for 2hrs and 22minutes. One last word of advice, don’t you leave that theatre until the lights come on! There are 2 sequences in the credits, one early and one at the very end that you MUST SEE! Check your reality at the door, grab a bag of popcorn and wear loose pants because you’ll need the extra room.
